The previous evening as I was approaching this tree which hangs directly over the trail, I saw a branch sway slightly and was sure it was just a squirrel. As I walked directly beneath it, some branches swayed heavily and prompted me to stop and look up. What I saw was the belly of a black bear about 10 feet DIRECTLY over my head in the tree with his hind legs on a branch at the trunk and forelegs splayed way out on smaller branches as if he was reaching out for something. Because it was late in the day and the sky was dimming, it took a couple seconds for it to register in my mind just what the large black figure was. As I recognized the shape of its head, it let out a very forceful exhalation, which probably meant something like, "You DO realized I could eat your for dinner, right?" I said, "Don't make me come up there, FuzzBall! It won't be pretty!" Okay, maybe not...but I sure did make good time down the next mile or so of trail. :) As I was returning the following day, I found the tree and discovered numerous areas on the trunk and branches that the bear had damaged significantly. And in the next photo, you'll see a pile of what I'm assuming is bear poo that was located about 50 yards from the tree.
